The basic A1 and A2 flash hiders do a very good job. The only real difference between the A1 and the A2 is that the A2 lacks the three bottom slots. Most matches are held in broad daylight, and cardboard targets aren’t going to notice muzzle flash. A deer hunter, for instance, cares not one whit about muzzle flash. Also, there are a lot of uses where the shooter doesn’t really care if there is a visible flash or not. In a rifle-length 20-inch barrel it isn’t too bad, as there is enough length and time for cooling and pressure loss to keep flash manageable. The flash hider on your AR-15Īn AR barrel with no flash hider is problematic. By mixing the cooler ambient air with the expanding bubble in a random pattern, there is no longer a large flat surface, or bubble, to glow. A flash hider hides most of this by creating turbulence. The hot gases, expanding into the cool air, emit photons from heat, not from burning powder. ![]() The muzzle flash of your rifle is the same principle. Turn the light off, electrical flow stops, and the filament cools and stops emitting photons. The filament is not consumed, it is not burning, it simply ejects photons due to the heat. The filament, due to electrical resistance, is heated up until it is hot enough to be incandescent, and the glow is in the visible spectrum, which throws off … light. The electricity flows through the filament, and the filament glows due to the electrical resistance of the material involved. It expands too quickly to mix until it has sufficiently cooled.Īn example of incandescence is your common light bulb. At that temperature, the gas is incandescent and the glow happens to be in a part of the spectrum we can see.Īlso, the uncorking pressure of rifle ammo, typically 10,000 PSI or higher, produces a smooth-surfaced gas bubble. That gas leaves the muzzle in an expanding bubble. The confined combustion temperature of your average rifle powder is on the order of 3,500 to 3,700 degrees, Fahrenheit. The powder burns at a high pressure and temperature. Actually, the bright flash we see is incandescence. In rifles, the powder has all been burned by the time the bullet is 3 or 4 inches down the bore. In some handgun cartridges, the powder has been fully combusted before the bullet leaves the case. If you have not combusted all the powder the case contained in its travel through 16 inches of bore, you’re using the wrong powder. A thermal scope will see it every single time.ĭisregard the notion that flash is unburnt powder. Hot gas is hot gas, even if it isn’t incandescent in the visible spectrum. In fact, a rifle may produce a visible muzzle flash only part of the time, but through a thermal scope it will flash every time. What does a flash hider do, and what exactly is flash?įlash hiders keep muzzle flash down in the visible spectrum. For when you absolutely, positively, have to clear off the benches on either side of you. That’s what a muzzle brake does.A good muzzle brake is loud, as the gases are re-directed back at you or the guy next to you. ![]() You can use the leverage the barrel provides, and not just negate the added gas component to recoil, but pretty much negate all the recoil. – A muzzle brake jets the gases out to the sides or top, or causes them to slam into a fixed barrier, decelerating them. ![]() The volume of a right prism is the total space it occupies in the three-dimensional plane. The bank also has a snake farm, where they extract venom and make anti-venom. As I clicked away not wanting to touch the little slippery baby, the father-daughter duo tried handling and holding the little reptile feeling its spiny skin, small but sharp enough to scratch pointy teeth and soft yellowed belly. She was excited and scared all at once, to hold the baby crocodile. When we visited the bank in 2007, my daughter was a mere 8 year-old. That however, does not mean that we should not be alert about the danger lurking somewhere when we visit a lake or river…a natural territory of these reptiles!! The fun part is that since the reptiles are in separate enclosures, visitors can have a close look at them without compromising on safety. The centre also encourages visitors to handle baby crocodiles and alligators to understand and emphasise on conservation of ecosystem. It is important that we should not see crocodiles in their natural habitat as threat, but as guardians of river ecosystem. Lot of visitors flock to the Crocodile Conservation Centre of the bank which is the largest breeding centre in India. Need cleaning of my teeth….Any Bird around? This project was founded way back in 1976 by a German biologist Romulus Whitaker. The “ Crocodile Bank“at Mahabalipuram is one such endeavour to conserve and sustain environment. The dwindling natural habitat of crocodile due to construction, farming, mining etc besides hunting for crocodile hide has affected the population of crocodile and alligators as well and world-wide measures to prevent extinction of this beast of animal are in practice in many countries like Australia, USA and South East Asian countries. Crocodiles and alligators keep the rivers clean by eating carcasses of other species and balance the habitat population. Predators have an influential role in an ecosystem and are known as ‘keystone species’ because they keep a check on increasing number of other smaller animals. Nature has its own system of balancing the ecosystem….if there is increase in number of any one species, the balance goes for a toss. I remember, how I was surprised to hear about crocodile breeding….such dangerous animal, I had thought, why would anybody want them to increase in number? But I was very much wrong obviously! While I marvelled at the ingenious idea of Bangalore based NGO in bringing attention of civil authorities towards the dangerous pot-holed roads, by filling the pot-holes with life-like crocodiles and more recently Anaconda, I remembered one such visit to Crocodile Bank near Mahabalipuram, some 40 km from Chennai, Tamilnadu.
![]() ![]() 2023 Honda HR-V Review (Photo/Paul Eisenstein)Īs for the critical interior dimensions, it does lose a wee bit of space - but for the segment it competes in, there’s still an impressive 55.1 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seat is folded down. Overall, the 2023 HR-V measures 179.8 inches long, 72.4 inches wide, and 63.8 inches tall. It’s now 9.4 inches longer and 2.6 inches wider than before, with a 1.7-inch longer wheelbase. Where the original HR-V shared platforms with Honda’s pint-sized Fit hatchback, the new model is based on the same architecture as the 11th-generation Civic. But Honda has largely filled the gap in other ways. Sadly, that flexible seating system has been dropped from the 2023 HR-V. ![]() Much of the credit went to the HR-V’s “magic seats,” which could fold, tumble, and split in a variety of configurations to provide as much as 40 inches of rear legroom and 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space. As I quickly discovered myself, that small footprint actually disguised an unexpectedly roomy interior that allowed me to pack in a surprising amount of “stuff” while helping a friend move to a new home. The original Honda HR-V made its debut back in 2016 as one of the first in what has become an expanding field of subcompact crossovers. While no longer equipped with the “magic seats” found in the original model, the 2023 Honda HR-V is larger outside and roomier inside, providing a surprising amount of space for passengers and cargo. That includes a second-generation HR-V, the smallest ute in the Japanese brand’s lineup. Honda has dubbed this “the year of the SUV,” and for good reason, considering it’s in the midst of refreshing virtually all of its utility vehicles. We got behind the wheel of the 2023 Honda HR-V to see what this crossover is all about and if it can keep up its impressive sales momentum. Get the latest from the automotive world first by subscribing to our newsletter here.Sales are on fire for the Honda HR-V as the brand debuts the next generation of the crossover. If you don’t need the extra room, you can save quite a bit of money by opting for the much smaller HR-V without making too much of a compromise on tech and features.īecome an AutoGuide insider. If you need more space and want something reliable to get you to and from work, the CR-V will be well suited to you. The most important thing is that the HR-V is now available with many of the same safety features as the CR-V, so the gap between them is very small now. Honda has sorted out the problems with the 1.5-liter turbo engine now, and their confidence is apparent as the company has ditched the old faithful 2.4-liter motor altogether making the 1.5 the only engine available on the CR-V.Īs for the HR-V, the tiny four-pot still makes decent power, returns good fuel economy and is reasonably refined. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either of these crossovers to our friends and family. With all-wheel drive, the turbo motor is rated at 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for a combined rating of 29 mpg.īoth the Honda CR-V and HR-V are relatively popular and for good reason. The EPA rates the FWD CR-V with the 1.5-liter turbo four and CVT automatic transmission at 28 mpg city and 34 mpg for a combined rating of 30 mpg. Buying new however, according to Honda, will be trouble-free. So if you are considering a used CR-V you should look thoroughly into the paperwork. For clarity’s sake the problematic model years for the engine were 2016–2018 and the said model year CR-Vs also received extended warranties. But the problem has since been rectified. Some CR-V owners experienced problems with this engine in the past. ALSO SEE: Honda CR-V Turbo Problems? You’re Not Alone The engine is offered with a CVT gearbox only but is available as both front- and all-wheel drive. The 1.5-liter turbo-four is rated at 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. Instead, the gas-only version of the crossover is now powered by the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine only and is only available in one state of tune. Adrienne, along with Nicholas Carlini and David Wagner (Adrienne’s advisor) released “An Evaluation of the Google Chrome Extension Security Architecture.” In February of this year, my suspicion was justified. “Vulnerabilities in browser extensions put users at risk by providing a way for website and network attackers to gain access to users’ private data and credentials.”ĭéjà vu struck when I read that. In 2009, I wrote about Firefox having the same problem. Privilege separation: Extensions are built from two types of components, which are isolated from each other - content scripts and extension cores.Porter Felt: In 2009, Google Chrome introduced a new extension platform with several features intended to prevent and mitigate extension vulnerabilities: Before we get to your latest paper, would you bring us up to speed on the security features implemented in the Chrome extension system? Well, I could see it was time to call Adrienne and see what’s up. Content scripts interact with websites and execute with no privileges. Permissions: Each extension comes packaged with a list of permissions, which govern access to the browser APIs and web domains.Isolated worlds: Content scripts can read and modify website content, but content scripts and websites have separate program heaps so websites cannot access content scripts’ functions or variables.Extension cores do not directly interact with websites and execute with the extension’s full privileges. Kassner: You reviewed 100 Chrome extensions: If an extension has a core vulnerability, the attacker will only gain access to the permissions the vulnerable extension already has. Why is it important to make sure extensions are not vulnerable? The set of vulnerable extensions includes 7 extensions with more than 300,000 users each.” “27 of the 100 extensions contain one or more vulnerabilities, for a total of 51 vulnerabilities. Porter Felt: Extensions are fairly powerful - they can read users’ browsing history, passwords, email, etc. Kassner: Could you briefly explain how you determined if an extension was vulnerable? If an attacker compromises an extension, the attacker can get access to this personal information, too. ![]() Porter Felt: I worked with a fantastic undergraduate student at Cal named Nicholas Carlini. ![]() First, he would exercise the user interfaces of the extensions while monitoring their network traffic. Then, he read and searched through the extensions’ source code to find any attacks. I then reviewed each of the potential vulnerabilities to ensure they were real. We then built attacks to demonstrate the vulnerabilities truly existed. Kassner: The paper seems particularly concerned about extension-core vulnerabilities. Porter Felt: The “core” is the most powerful part of the extension, so a vulnerability in an extension core yields the most privileges to an attacker. To check for this possibility, you can use the Memory Diagnostic Tool on Windows to scan your PC for memory problems. The extension core includes invisible background code, options, and any other HTML the extension provides. ![]()
